ABSTRACT
At age 71, Franchetta became legally blind. Her case manager enrolled her in an intensive eight-week rehabilitation program designed to teach her all she needed to know to lead an independent life. For Franchetta, the course lasted only three weeks. Because she could not master the braille, the cane travel, the computer with voice synthesizer, the talking book tape player and, of all things, the fencing class, she had dropped out.
