ABSTRACT

Spirituality is manifested in language, a symbolic referential system. Spirituality is manifested in ethics, a perception of the kind of person one envisions him/herself to be. Spirituality shows itself in creativity. Many who are privileged to work with the dying and bereaved believe that spirituality shows itself in the completion of life tasks. All conscious human activity is a form of spirituality for reasons; what is commonly spoken of as spirituality in discussions is what might be called “self-aware spirituality,” that is an awareness of oneself as a unique center of knowledge and valuation. Since the person is a meaning seeking being, spiritual pain is produced when one has the sense that his/her life is meaningless. Faith provides relief of guilt and sorrow; a longer view by a tie of present sufferings to time-honored sources of spiritual strength; and courage in the present and direction for the future.
