ABSTRACT

A distinction needs to be drawn between dedicated word-processing systems and word-processing packages installed on general-purpose computer systems. In many cases, the difference is only in the eye of the beholder, for dedicated word-processing systems are frequently general-purpose computers that have been cosmetically and functionally altered to limit their capabilities and to make them simpler for their users. The heart of any word-processing system is a computer. Many of the applications of computer technology to the production of documents rely on the availability of hardware and/or software. The operating system of a computer gives the computer its fundamental instructions and interprets the commands given by the user into instructions that can be understood and executed by the computer. The availability of the capabilities of a computer system allows a variety of tasks to be automated and easily performed. The use of computers to store, retrieve, insert, and update boilerplate material has made the practice easier.
