ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with the traditional statement that training consists of the practices and facilities for getting an individual or a group from some starting competence to some range of criterion competence. A taxonomy of training would be an organized category structure derived from a technology of training. The objective for a training taxonomy is to reflect a decision-making model for the selection and application of facilities, procedures and sequencing schedules. The psychology of learning, and therefore the technology of training, has not explicitly recognized, much less adopted or reconciled, these fundamental alternatives in the creating of work competences. Training technology would consist of the rules for creating modules and for relating them to each other in order to achieve a specification of a see of training operations. Perhaps the most extensive programmatic, self-consistent developmental and applied effort in training technology is expressed by the 'systems engineering of training' activity at the Human Resources Research Office (HumRRO).
