ABSTRACT

The establishment of Christian schools in the midst of a society that values educational conformity requires energy, confidence, and resourcefulness. It represents both an act of rebellion and commitment. This chapter focuses on the "macro" world and the ways in which ACE Christian schools conform to the new requirements of American society and the demands of its economy. While evangelicals are challenging the established order of American public education, in many ways they are also reproducing the social structure of American society. Christian schools represent the mobilization efforts of evangelicals to establish greater control over the socialization and education of the young, and therefore, over the future of society. Studies of public schools have shown that lower-class and minority schools and curricula tend to emphasize conformity to external rules and exhibit a high degree of discipline. People at Covenant and the Academy are preparing their children to live in this world.
