ABSTRACT

The imperative – el imperativo – is a mood used to give commands, and is similar to the imperative in English. The imperative for usted and ustedes follows the form of the third persons singular and plural of the present subjunctive. Verbs with any irregularities in the present tense keep the same irregularity in the imperative, except in the vosotros/vosotras form. The negative imperative is formed by placing no before the present subjunctive form. This applies to all negative forms, singular and plural, tu or usted. Object pronouns are appended to the imperative form when it is affirmative. The reflexive pronouns that are part of pronominal verbs are also appended to the imperative form when it is affirmative. Advertisements are full of expressions using the imperative. Verbs ending in -ar take endings with -e in the subjunctive, verbs ending in -er or -ir take endings with -a.
