ABSTRACT

Conditionals express hypotheses and refer to events which are dependent on a condition that needs to be fulfilled for the events to take place. The simple form of the conditional – el condicional simple – is equivalent to ‘would’ + infinitive in English. The form of the conditional has some similarities with the form of the future tense. Like the future tense, the conditional adds the relevant endings to the infinitive. The conditional perfect – el condicional compuesto – expresses hypothesis and probability in relation to past actions. The conditional perfect is formed by the conditional of haber + the past participle of the verb. It is equivalent to the English construction ‘would have’ + past participle.
