ABSTRACT

School food becomes a way to mould children; it is a means through which the normal body can be constructed and produced. The school food plan (SFP) has drawn together practices concerning food and amalgamated them into one cohesive text that can then be translated and put into action. The SFP acknowledges and examines the problem of hunger and poverty in schools. The SFP draws upon the history of school meals policy, building upon it and changing it in various ways. In comments made in 2015, Jamie Oliver argued that some schools were still not doing enough to teach children about healthy cooking. Turing the Tables outlined the English government's strategy for improving school meals and improving children's food knowledge. The reforms undertaken by the Thatcher government can be viewed as a policy strategy to discursively create responsible, self-disciplining citizens.
