ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the beginning of the school day, first foray into the school foodscape. It discusses the contexts and communities of the different schools in the study, the school's individual philosophies and approaches to food, and their breakfast club set-ups. Officially children had to arrive at breakfast club by 8.20am, in order to have time to finish eating before school began. Breakfast time thus provides a space for play, prior to the beginning of formal learning. The provision of breakfast is simply one aspect of a complex school food web in need of further funding. The chapter describes how breakfast is viewed sociologically as different to school lunchtimes, with different rules, and considers examples to show how breakfast clubs are also opportunities for playtime. It also discusses how breakfast clubs bring parent-child relationships front and centre, highlighting the kinds of moralities that exist around food and eating.
