ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses specifically on how parents can best include themselves and feel valuable as a teacher's best partners. Teachers want to see students succeed. It is a reflection of their dedication to you, your child, and the world in which one all live. Good recordkeeping is an asset for both parents and teachers, as it prevents miscommunication and misunderstandings later. The special education laws were established to protect the rights of the vulnerable. It is to your advantage to know everything you can about your child's rights under the law and to be the voice for your child. Teachers are grateful when parents speak up, because teachers know that parents have the power to get things done. It is also important to remember that when you advocate for your child, you are not only setting a precedent for your child's education. Advocacy can be challenging when you're unfamiliar with special education lingo.
