ABSTRACT

Fifth-grade students are designing pages for a website titled “What If They Didn’t?” that profiles those from World War II who helped to save people of the Jewish faith from the Holocaust. They are reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. In writing their courage profiles, they have to compare and contrast a person of their choice who made a difference with the actions and beliefs of the characters in the story. They will then share how people today can make a difference in standing against current and future genocide. According to the analytic rubric, they have to quote accurately from text. Shadi isn’t sure he knows what this means, so he looks at his activity list and chooses a video to watch to help him out.
