ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the personal story of Karen Crouse, a sportswriter. She is a graduate of St. Francis High School in Mountain View and the University of Southern California, where she majored in journalism and minored in chlorine as a member of the women's swim team. She has been at The New York Times for 10 years, the last five as the golf writer. In 2016, she covered the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, her 10th Olympics, where she wrote about Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky and the 74-year-old woman who coached the runner who won the 400m in world record time. After the project was graded, Crouse made two extra copies of Splash for Rose and Bruner. He was so excited for them to see that he had received an A for his efforts. As it happened, shortly thereafter he attended the Olympic trials in Long Beach, Calif., with his father, who arranged the trip as his graduation gift.
