ABSTRACT

Mark Godich landed his first job, as a sportswriter and copy editor at the Reporter-News in Abilene, Texas after graduating from the University Of Missouri School Of Journalism in 1979. He returned to his alma mater in 1982 as an instructor in the journalism school and the sports editor of the Columbia Missourian. At the Dallas Times Herald, he worked on the sports desk and as an assistant editor before being promoted to executive sports editor. His tenure came during a time when the award-winning staff uncovered rules and recruiting violations in Southwest Conference football programs, including SMU, which was handed the death penalty by the NCAA. After a year at the Associated Press, Godich was hired as a senior editor in charge of college basketball and golf coverage at The National Sports Daily in New York City. He then ventured into magazines as the managing editor and executive editor at Golf Shop Operations, the trade magazine for Golf Digest.
