ABSTRACT

Children with learning disabilities account for a substantial percentage of all school-aged children who receive special education services in the United States. Despite the prevalence of learning disabilities, misconceptions and misunderstandings about learning disabilities create confusion for parents and teachers. This chapter will address some of these misunderstandings to include what learning disabilities actually are; whether or not they are mild or may simply be laziness; and if they include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Additionally, we address the social-emotional complications for this group of children, when learning disabilities appear to emerge suddenly, and helping students prepare for post-secondary education.
