ABSTRACT

Home–school collaboration yields numerous benefits in terms of improved student engagement, achievement, and social and emotional development. Collaboration, built on trust and mutual respect, should be present in attitudes, communication patterns, and actions. Communication must be frequent, open, and reciprocal. Actions include teacher invitations to parents, parent support for academic activities, and shared decision making. Homework is identified as a focal point for home–school collaboration. Emphasis is placed on appreciating families’ and teachers’ diverse cultural backgrounds as well as on the importance of jointly nurturing and guiding children.
