ABSTRACT
Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders present with a wide range of needs but one common element to most problems is a lack of independence in desired skills or appropriate behavior. A common approach to addressing such problems is to provide supplemental instruction in a particular area. Unfortunately, this does not always resolve the concerns. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss several factors that can affect independence and to illustrate three situations where a lack of independent performance is not due to a lack of skill or knowledge and, thus, would require an intervention other than additional practice.
