ABSTRACT

This chapter explores an interdisciplinary model of art therapists and teaching artists working together with court-involved youth or young people otherwise involved in the juvenile justice system through the work of Artistic Noise. Artistic Noise works toward social justice by utilizing issue-based art education, positive youth development, and restorative justice practices. Art therapy with court-involved youth can be less stigmatizing than verbal therapies as art-making can be perceived as a novel way of building relationships, addressing mental health needs, and strengthening community. A brief case example is provided to illustrate Artistic Noise’s approach. The chapter also includes recommendations for practitioners and artists interested in these methods.
