ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the commentary by George Salem on KWGN Television in Denver, Colorado. In the commentary broadcast two days after Nixon’s speech, Salem argued that the question of whether the United States should get out of Vietnam was the wrong question. He suggested a complete and total withdrawal as demanded by the communists, or a gradual withdrawal, depending on the shape of the South Vietnamese army and the level of communist activity. Salem commented that Nixon was “trying to make huge losses mean something instead of writing them off and still provide a chance for those Asians who wish to be something other than poverty-stricken, hungry, and uneducated.”
