ABSTRACT

Project management is accomplished by applying knowledge and skills while using tools and standard processes to meet project requirements. A project moves through a defined set of process groups, from the initial definition of need to the final release of resources. Many of these processes are iterative throughout the project's lifecycle. The more the project manager learns about a project, the greater degree of detail there is to be managed. The initiating process group includes all activities that lead up to the formal authorization to begin the new project. These activities are often started, and sometimes even completed, prior to the project manager being assigned. The planning process group takes the information gathered and documented during initiation to develop the project management plan. This plan further defines the objectives and then outlines the course of action to complete the project. The executing process group occurs when the activities defined in the project management plan are completed.
