ABSTRACT

Chapter 1, “Introduction,” makes the case for providing a parent-based early intervention to adults with eating disorder histories who want to develop healthy eating habits in their children. The chapter outlines the key tenets of the Parent-Based Prevention program, an empirically-supported, time limited, focused intervention for fathers or mothers with eating disorders. The intervention is composed of three modules, delivered in twelve sessions: Phase One, setting up joint goals; Phase Two, distinguishing the parental eating disorder from parental functioning; and Phase Three, enhancing parental efficacy and family resilience. The chapter also provides information about the parental eating disorder subtypes for which the Parent-Based Prevention program is suitable: mothers and fathers with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, Binge-Eating Disorder, or any other eating disorder, either Unspecified or Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder. Drs. Sadeh-Sharvit and Lock also review suggested clinician qualifications for delivering Parent-Based Prevention to reduce feeding or eating disorders in the children of parents with body image disturbances, weight management problems, or other eating disorder symptoms.
