ABSTRACT

The Iran-E3 + 3 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is an unprecedented attempt to curb Iran’s ability to cross the nuclear weapons threshold. The deal’s effectiveness in preventing an Iranian nuclear weapons capability has been thoroughly debated, but its impact on regional stability has received limited attention. The JCPOA has significant regional consequences, including the economic impacts of lifting sanctions, implications for Middle East conflicts, effect of the deal on energy strategies, and prospects for a WMD-Free Zone in the Middle East. Such less-discussed elements are likely to have a substantial influence on the long-term goal of sustainable regional security.
