ABSTRACT

Mourning is a period of postloss grieving when we reevaluate our relationships

with others and with ourselves. Mourning proceeds as a search. It is a form of

“exploring,” during which we get to know again a world that has been irrevocably

changed by our loss. This “getting to know again” entails sorting out the familiar

from the unfamiliar. As we mourn, we learn anew how things work, on whom

we can count-and on whom, we discover, we cannot truly rely. Mourning often

confounds our expectations.
