The difference between power and manipulation and
warfare is scale. Warfare requires a leader who can take
the elements of power and manipulation, scale them up
exponentially and manage multiple levels of warfare si-
multaneously. There is nothing pretty about warfare,
and fortunately, only a handful of CIOs in the Armed
Forces fight the lethal wars in real battlefields and pro-
tect the rest of us. But it is essential that CIOs learn from
them and master the Machiavellian principles of run-
ning multilateral campaigns in order to succeed in the
complex world of IT today.
