ABSTRACT

When a storm hits, most people’s inclination is to head for safety. Literally or figuratively, it’s best to be in the basement, away from the fury. In business, a storm of another type-such as a crisis caused by economic, safety, environmental, or other issues-often prompts the same “duck and cover” response. Only someone with courage and stamina can face the storm head on. These stalwart and notable few willingly stand exposed to the storm, taking a lashing (including from the media and the general public) in order to provide a clearheaded perspective or to calm irrational fears. Leadership that is developed throughout one’s career becomes tested and defined during times of crisis.
