When the Pilgrims first dropped anchor in November 1620 and rowed ashore, they needed more than shelter. They needed to find water and food. And it was a lot colder than they expected, so they had to make new, warmer clothing. And it behooved them to establish friendly relations with the people they found living there who (reasonably) weren’t all that happy about these outlandish newcomers moving into their neighborhood.
