ABSTRACT

Khough I should expect it by now, it still surprises me to #nd people with impeccable credentials in accounting and #nance who are terrible at running their businesses. And on the other side, people who can’t even balance their checkbooks may be great. Part of the incredulity comes, I believe, from our pervasive tendency to think of businesses primarily as number-generating entities, rather than social entities. !e other clue from that observation is that what you need to know about numbers to do a pretty e"ective job of running a business isn’t really all that di&cult. In fact, I o$en see numbers-centric people overthinking their numbers, looking for all the right answers to rise from their spreadsheets and missing the fundamental points of their businesses.
