ABSTRACT

One major area where the new democratic administration made considerable impact in health promotion was the control of counterfeit and adulterated drugs. For years, Nigeria had the highest rate of adulterated drugs in West Africa. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) was established by Decree No. 15 of 1993 (Federal Ministry of Health 1993). However, prior to 1999, the agency made limited progress in reducing the prevalence of fake and adulterated drugs in the country due to its weak administrative structure. At the time, high rates of adulterated antimalarial and antibacterial drugs contributed to the high burden of maternal ill health in the country.
