ABSTRACT
On March 11, 2011, Japan suffered its largest earthquake ever recorded. With a magnitude of 9.0, the Great East Japan Earthquake-centered beneath the Pacific Ocean, not far off Japan’s coast-was powerful enough to change the earth’s figure axis (the axis around which earth’s mass is balanced) by more than half a foot, according to a NASA scientist.1
