ABSTRACT

You are busy, incredibly busy, and you’re even busier than usual because you have some open positions on your senior leadership team. If you go to the trouble of hiring a search partner, give her some time up front and talk with her about the role. A position description gives some information, to be sure, but it hardly tells the whole story. Your recruiter has questions: How would you rank the top requirements for the role? How would you sell the opportunity to your favorite candidate? What is the culture of the team you already have in place? Investing the time at the beginning of the search to talk through the role with your recruiter will save you a lot of pain and anguish down the road. Your recruiter has documents she needs you to approve-the final position description, the target company search list. The longer you take to approve those documents, the longer your search will take. If you don’t have the time, appoint a trusted direct report who can act on your behalf.
