ABSTRACT

Fire stations must accommodate firefighting appliances and their crew to enable them to efficiently carry out their duties as set by the national, regional and metropolitan authorities that manage the fire and rescue services. Fire and Rescue Services deploy various appliances which undertake specific tasks. The returning appliances should be able to navigate a clear sweeping approach from the return access to the covered wash down area, stopping on the centre line of its respective appliance bay. The activities of training and appliances turning out to answer emergency calls can cause nuisance to neighbours by noise, vibration and external lighting. In an emergency the primary consideration is to get the fire fighting appliance onto the road quickly. On-site sleeping accommodation is no longer required. Satellite stations have from two to six ambulances and deal only with accident and emergency calls. Emergency electrical supply is essential throughout, not only for power failure but also in the event of fire.
