ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the design of schools in England and Wales at the time of writing. In other parts of the UK, design standards and education delivery varies. Since the late 2000s, school design development has increased significantly as development of curriculum and education delivery methods along with major programmes of school renewal, have driven the education design debate. The national curriculum applies to pupils of compulsory school age in community and foundation schools, including community special schools and foundation special schools, and voluntary aided and voluntary controlled schools. As part of its role, Ofsted inspects schools and produces reports into its findings using a set framework of criteria on a range of subjects from the safety of the environment that the school provides to the quality of teaching and learning in individual lessons. The main different types of schools are: state maintained, academies, free schools, and privately funded schools.
