ABSTRACT

It was a December day sometime in the late 1950s. The snow had been falling heavily all night, promising the school children an unscheduled vacation the next day. While we parents may have fretted about the prospect of having to shovel driveways and sidewalks, a "snow day" was the best sort of holiday for our offspring, who were delighted at the prospect of a whole day of nothing but play with their friends. Our suburban neighborhood was amply provided with throngs of children, the babies of the Baby Boom grown to school age.
