ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a dyadic model of interpersonal interaction which can be applied directly to the analysis of interviewing. It provides a systematic structure for interpreting the interpersonal dimensions of interviewing. The chapter builds upon the necessary foundation by conceptualising interviewing primarily as a process of interpersonal interaction, which can be interpreted by utilising methods developed for the study of the latter. It presents a model of interpersonal communication which can be applied directly to the analysis of interviewing. The two remaining elements of the model concern personal and situational factors, and both are crucially important during social interaction. Emotions also have an important role to play in social interaction. The third stage in the model of interpersonal interaction is the response phase. Once a response has been executed, feedback will be available to the interviewer. Person perception is clearly an important dimension of interviewing.
