Critiquing Self and Community
As the men and women in this study engaged in life review and attempted to
make sense of their experiences, they offered assessments of themselves, others,
and their communities. At one time or another, they offered their opinions on
theological or political practices, especially those that appeared to threaten core
spiritual beliefs. Eventually, we realized that this practice was more than a
conversational style-it was a vital part of their spiritual resiliency.
