ABSTRACT

Narrative practice can be applied in work consultancy and team facilitation, using the same stance and techniques as in casework and supervision. If health and social care professionals have a pressing need to give and receive supervision on their cases, they also have a need to talk about the issues that arise in their teams and workplaces, and their roles there. This chapter is about such issues, and ways of helping with them by using a narrative approach. A number of issues commonly emerge in work consultancy. The chapter describes a representative sample of these, with illustrative cases to demonstrate ways of addressing them through a narrative-based approach. The cases are all drawn from practitioners who attended courses and workshops in "Conversations Inviting Change" or who have applied a narrative-based approach in their work. Many of the narratives that practitioners tell concern the difficulties of managing juniors or the challenges of being managed.
