ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses that, ironically, believing in rational actors is profoundly irrational. It explores the human side of shipping. The book deals with high-level concepts, addresses the problems that arise from our human nature, and offers practical advice for avoiding the illusions, fallacies, and biases that have plagued the shipping industry for decades. It draws the most recent research available and especially the emerging fields of heterodox economics and economic pluralism. In addition to the institutional and behavioral focus, the book sheds light on practical solutions and developments. The book demonstrates how our human nature affects our economic decisions in the shipping business. The book enables people to examine their actions more critically and use better judgment as well as providing the necessary awareness and the new conceptual apparatus to succeed in the shipping business.
