ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that there was a gap between well-known scientists and the science; that is, a gap between experts and their expertise. Technical expertise in the business of shipping is vast. Actually, every ship brokering and chartering office serves as a type of shipping consultant. In addition, there are those with impressive titles like shipping consultant, shipping advisor, shipping investment consultancy, and so on. Expertise is know-how, but more than that it is 'know-why.' Many experts say they have the know-how. The problem is that they are not really experts since many of them do not have the know-why. Since there are many tricky aspects, it is difficult to choose the right one from the number of firms and people out there. When one do find an expert, though, one can then proceed to the next step: dealing with a real expert who knows much more than you.
