ABSTRACT

Children who have difficulty in learning pose great problems both at home and in the classroom. From the child's point of view, the learning situation can become very depressing, if not intolerable. Slow learning is due to many causes, which are rarely found singly but tend to come in clusters. Teaching the slow learner is a prime example of teaching to learn – in particularly difficult circumstances. The important parts of a slow learner's education are the processes and not the product. In other words, how to set about the task, not what is achieved. The type of dysfunction from which a child is suffering will be apparent in his learning behaviour. Normally, classrooms or groups function at a recognisable level. If a child has not reached that level of development, the teacher should be the first to notice, for the child will fail to reach the minimum goal of the lesson.
