ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on some practical and effective strategies for interventions with children. It discusses an intervention strategy which involves both the school and the home, and which may well be equally effective in changing children's classroom behaviour and their academic performance. The book describes a modified behaviour modification strategy which, although developed independently, has strong similarities with David Leach's approach. It explores the concept of the 'consultant' in managing interventions. The book also focuses on one particular behavioural problem, namely non-attendance. It outlines some of the educational issues and suggests some practical approaches. The book provides a brief introduction to intervention in cases of learning difficulties. It reviews and evaluates a range of intervention strategies, from a research as well as a practical perspective.
