ABSTRACT

Hopkins. D and Vickers. C described process consultation for a school self-evaluation project, in this case as a means of developing team-building, problem-solving skills, and action planning with a school staff. Behavioural consultation is associated with applied behavioural analysis techniques and to the social learning. Dissatisfaction with traditional psychometric and psycho-dynamic assessments and the effectiveness of behavioural interventions has led to their wide application in educational settings. The consultant will have models and strategies for creating a more effective learning environment which will prevent most disruptive behaviours from occurring. Typically the goal of behavioural consultation is to assist the teacher in introducing specific changes in the classroom setting in order to modify learning or behavioural problems. Consultation problems can be characterized as corrective, progressive, or creative. The organizational school psychologist, or consultant, assists staff, management, and parents to identify priority needs and concerns related to the service units and then develop policies, procedures, or programmes that will enhance the identified concern.
