ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the 180 years of Medici reign in Siena and argues that overall, the era saw a decline in living standards in Siena, although the nobility maintained a surprisingly powerful role in the city’s governance and public life. This chapter also examines the evolution of the contrade and Palio during this period.
