ABSTRACT
After a lengthy examination of the Lorena family’s control over Siena, and in particular, the reforms of Pietro Leopoldo, this chapter considers the development of the city and the growing importance of the contrade throughout the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, a turbulent era that witnessed Siena adjusting to a changing world of revolution, unification, and world war.
