ABSTRACT
This chapter reflects on the economic miracle of Sienese growth since World War II, highlighting the role of the Monte dei Paschi in Siena’s prosperity and stability and the ways in which the bank’s wealth allowed the city to reach an unprecedented position by the year 2000. The book then examines the collapse of the Monte dei Paschi and its devastating consequences on the city before finishing with a final reflection on the Sienese civilization today.
