ABSTRACT

From the Algerians' standpoint, the occupation of Algeria by Christian France was an irreverent act. One of the earliest impacts of colonists' control of Algerian women's sexuality was the emergence of sex-tourism, which turned dancers from the south, who were free to marry men of their choosing, into prostitutes. The French implicit promotion of prostitution and nationalists' objections to it reveal the extent to which both groups understood the crucial role played by women in maintaining cultural integrity. The role played by education in the lives of all Young Algerians, the new native French-educated intellectuals, no matter their orientation, was reflected in their insistence on the extension of education to girls as well as boys. A close look at the education received by Algerian girls, as reflected in yearly award ceremonies that included staged dialogues Rather, it reveals the political goal that education pursued.
