ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the underlying factors inherent in the incumbent system of work and health, and proposes specific suggestions for system innovation pertaining to workplace health development. It describes an innovative perspective on workplace health development processes and also discusses three cases namely Telegraaf Media Groep, KPN and Deventer Hospital in which attempts were made to implement these processes. The chapter explains how the incumbent regime influences these practices, thus providing an indication of changes in the regime. It begins with historically contextualizing workplace health development processes, and also explains the current definition and determinants of workplace health. This provides a basis for considering a pathogenic and salutogenic orientation of workplace health. Examples from case studies involving three Dutch companies which have tried to implement an innovative approach to health promotion in the workplace serve to illustrate the opportunities and barriers for system innovation in this field. The chapter concludes by discussing strategies for the transition needed in this area.
