ABSTRACT

In a highly influential series of experiments conducted in the 1950s, Solomon Asch (1952, 1955, 1956) examined conformity pressure in a group situation. Asch's classic conformity studies involved individuals

5 making line-length judgments in the presence of others also making judgments about the same stimuli. Asch found that participants often agreed with incorrect confederate responses even though, presumably, they could easily discern which of three presented lines

1 0 matched a target line. Based on Asch' s results, it is clear that the behavior of others can influence an individual's own behavior.
