ABSTRACT

Villages in India are the lifeblood of the country’s economy, playing a crucial role in the development of the nation. And as with any developing nation, India is facing challenges related to preserving its bountiful nature along with reaching new heights in development. Indian cities and villages are equal victims of growing mounds of solid wastes. But it is a fact that villages are often neglected when it comes to solid waste management. The nature of the waste generated today in villages is comparable to that in cities; credits go to the reach of globalization, but it is also true that the principles of solid waste management that are applicable to cities may fail when applied to villages. This chapter discusses factors that need to be considered related to solid waste management in Indian villages, the need to encourage decentralized solid waste management systems, and the need to develop novel methods to tackle solid waste that has been generated.
