ABSTRACT

I like this photograph. Lying perpendicular is a tree that was once

a vibrant part of the forest canopy. Judging by its girth, it lived

many years, and then, at some point fell to the forest floor. But that

was not the end for this particular tree. Looking closely, one sees

incredible growth. Small saplings peer out, larger trees now firmly

rooted into its trunk stretch toward the sunlight, and a soothing

green moss extends across the length of it. The original tree blends

into the surroundings, still present, but now performing a new

role in the forest. I took this photograph in 2008 while on a journey

to find peace among the great trees of Western Canada. I named

it “Rebirth.”
