ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 provides an outline history of how the world of work has evolved and of the various ways in which people have sought to secure the resources they need to live and/or to self-actualise. Intentionally that outline does not refer to entrepreneurs or entrepreneurship because that is what this chapter examines. It seeks to indicate where, in the different forms and contexts of work described in Chapter 2 , different observers claim to have identifi ed entrepreneurs or supposed that entrepreneurship might exist. In effect it seeks to add entrepreneurship as an overlay to the historical map indicated in the previous chapter, and it also indicates the sort of activity which was thus identifi ed as entrepreneurship.
