ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the reactions of the three superpowers mentioned in Chapter 2 (Rome, Persia and China) to the Hunnic challenge. Whereas the Chinese were overall successful in adapting to the new geopolitical reality, Rome failed to manage their Hunnic problem. It also examines how the brief resurgence of Eastern Roman and Sassanian Persian power after the fall of the Hunnic empires in both Europe and Central Asia, was ended by geostrategic errors on the part of both the Romans and the Persians.
